How does that shirt fit, Sol?
By: Darrell | May 12th, 2008Better question: Does it even look right?
The shirt is nice, but does he look nice in it?
I know, the rumor began some time ago, but since I just started writing for The Offside I thought it’d be best to address it now. Besides, it’s resurfaced in the past couple of days. One report already confirms that Campbell will sign following the completion of Portsmouth’s season. But hey, as we all know in football, nothing’s certain until pen is put to paper.
Many say he just wants a free ride to the Champions League.
But can you really imagine the big baldy donning the all-yellow? He’s done it before when Arsenal had those yellow Villarreal knock-offs as their third kits. It just looked pretty tacky.
Aesthetics aside, I’d like to know what all of you think of the potential move. The defense is already solid, anchored by Capdevila. Any need for more pace in the back, which a Campbell presence could provide? The guy is quick and good in the air, but is he really what Villarreal needs now?
I’ve been particularly wary of English nationals trying to make it in Spain. So many have tried and failed - Beckham, Woodgate, McManaman, etc. Owen was decent, but still one and done at Madrid. For that matter, nobody on the English team plays overseas, except for Beckham. By contrast, Spaniards such as Torres, Fabregas, Reina, Xabi Alonso and many others have flourished in the Premiership.
So, should the transfer come to fruition, I pose the following questions to you all…
A) Can Sol Campbell adapt to the Spanish style of play?
B) What will he bring to the side in the Champions League, going up against other European clubs?
and
C) The guy is old. Is this what Villarreal needs, a good mix of young and has-beens (but with experience)? Or go more for the big name superstars in their prime and much still ahead of them?
I’d like to hear your comments and perhaps address them in a future post on this subject as events unfold.

His head looks quite big for that shirt…
But seriously, I think he could do a job for you. I mean there’s no reason he can’t just cos he’s English, its more a worry about his age, but he’s been great for Pompy this year.

I think he’d be a brilliant aquisition for you. The slower pace of La Liga will suit him and he will be able to rely on his expereince and influence instead of being exposed by the fast pace of the Prem. Over the last few weeks he’s looked slightly off pace.
Cygan looked disastrous at Arsenal but has done well for you, am I right?
I want him to stay but I’m pretty sure he’ll leave.
It would be great for him to sign out with an FA Cup winners medal with Pompey.

Now why would Sol go to Villareal? I’m sure any rising EPL team, like Everton, Newcastle, or even Aston Villa for that matter would pick him. The Spainards have a different take on the game down there, its more of a “build your team with the best players you can find, isolate them, and make ‘em run” as a pose to the English “find the right players, not the best ones {o yea, and a very tall center forward}

You bring up an interesting point about Premier League players transitioning to Spain, and La Liga players to England. The latter almost always excell, the former usually flop. Here’s an opinion for you: while this is not a rule, the typical Premier league defender is pretty limited. Basically, their skill set enables them to tackle someone running at them. Defending against Spanish play is far more complicated, and difficult. It took 7 men in the box for Man U to handle what most Spanish teams cover with 4. So where Torres struggled to score goals as an Atleti, he has his way in England against immobile defenders. Makes them look silly, actually.
Woodgate is another great example of par between the leagues. Complete shite in Spain, goes back to England and is up for defender of the year the next season.
So no, I don’t think Sol Campbell is a good idea. He’ll be decent at covering set peices, though.
